MOVING INTERSTATE

If you use disability specialist services and are planning to move to another State or Territory, then it is important that you read the following information.

States and Territories have agreed to facilitate access into their service system based on relative priority of need. Disability specialist services work differently in each State and Territory therefore it is important to make as many arrangements as possible prior to moving to ensure that you are fully informed of what is available. The information obtained may impact upon your decision to move.

Some Helpful Tips

Can I get a service?

States and Territories have agreed to allow individuals to register their demand for service PRIOR to any planned move interstate. This approach gives people with disabilities the security of staying in the State of origin while potential service options are being explored in the new location.   As there is a high demand for disability specialist services, it must be noted that it may take some considerable time before services become available in your new home State / Territory.

Can I get specialist equipment for my home?

Again, each State / Territory equipment services differ. Eligibility for the equipment program also varies. You may be able to take your existing equipment with you. Please call your equipment provider to find out what aids and equipment you can take with you.

In addition the following questions may help you determine if you can get the equipment that you need and should be asked of the service provider in the State/Territory of destination prior to your move.

What equipment is obtainable under a funded program?

         Are there eligibility criteria?

What is the usual waiting period?

Is a referral necessary, and if so from whom?

How does the assessment procedure work?

Should case files be brought along so that there is not a need for another full assessment?

Who can I speak to?

The best thing you can do is to contact the person in your State or Territory who is responsible for information on moving.   The contact list below provides details of the people in your State / Territory that can help you with information on disability specialist services and aids and equipment.
